Travel medical insurance requirements for the Schengen visa

Minimum cover and expenses covered
Under Article 15 of the Visa Code, a minimum cover of EUR 30,000 is foreseen. It concerns expenses which might arise in connection with the following:
- repatriation for medical reasons
- urgent medical attention
- emergency hospital treatment
- death
Territorial and temporal scope
The insurance shall be valid throughout the territory of the Member States and cover the entire period of the person's intended stay or transit.
The Visa Code foresees that the insurance is taken out in the country of residence as a rule; where this is not possible, it may be taken out in another country.
Who decides on adequacy
Whether the proof submitted is adequate is assessed by the competent mission in each individual case. Additional formal requirements of individual missions are possible.
