Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) — Proof of Financing for Germany

Anyone applying for a student or language-course visa for Germany must prove to the embassy that they have enough money for their stay. Typically this proof is provided via a blocked account.

What is a blocked account?

A blocked account is a special German bank account into which one full year of living expenses is deposited before entering Germany. After arrival, only a fixed amount may be withdrawn each month — hence 'blocked'.

How much is required?

The minimum amount set by the German BAMF is currently around €992 per month, i.e. roughly €11,904 per year. The exact figure is adjusted annually — the responsible German embassy provides binding values.

Who is a blocked account typical for?

  • Students at universities and colleges (visa § 16b AufenthG)
  • Study applicants and Studienkolleg participants
  • Language learners with a language-course visa
  • Sometimes also: Au-pairs, interns, Chancenkarte applicants

How opening one typically works

  1. 1Register online with a recognized provider (passport + visa documents).
  2. 2Transfer the required amount (e.g. €11,904) from your home account to the blocked account.
  3. 3Receive the confirmation and submit it to the embassy with your visa application.
  4. 4After entering Germany, unlock the account — funds are then available monthly.
