Documents for the Opportunity Card
In brief
Official Opportunity Card guidance names several document categories. The competent German mission and, where applicable, the Consular Services Portal determine what is required in the individual application.
Type of sources used
The page is based exclusively on the official sources listed below, reviewed on 19 August 2026.
Qualification and recognition
Evidence of academic or vocational qualification is required and, depending on the access route, evidence of recognition in Germany or state recognition in the country of training.
Language and financing
Language evidence can be relevant under the points route. In both routes, living costs must be secured; official guidance lists options such as a blocked account or declaration of commitment.
Health insurance and application
A current Federal Foreign Office checklist states that the Opportunity Card health-insurance proof can be either private German health insurance valid throughout the Schengen area, with at least €30,000 coverage and validity for the full validity period of the Opportunity Card, or German public health insurance evidenced by a letter from the German health insurer together with travel health insurance for the first three weeks. Proof must be provided no later than visa collection. The current checklist of the competent German mission remains decisive for the application route and any additional documents.
Additional evidence
The competent mission may request additional documents. This page is therefore not an exhaustive checklist.
