The 90/180-day rule

For short stays, the general approach looks back over each relevant 180-day period to determine whether no more than 90 days of presence fall within it. Entry and exit days count as days of stay. Special situations may be treated differently.

Limits of the general rule

National visas, residence permits, bilateral arrangements and other special cases can fall outside the simple short-stay calculation. If your short-stay visa sticker authorises fewer than 90 days of stay, do not use the EU calculator for that visa; follow the authorised duration printed on the visa sticker. This website does not assess individual cases; competent authorities remain responsible for binding information.
